Small Business Saturday is just around the corner and there’s just about nothing more satifying than knowing that you are financially supporting a small or local business by purchasing their products or services. Although many Black Americans have vowed to boycott major shopping holidays such as Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, many are opting to purchase from black-owned businesses instead of from white-owned coorporations.
A recent NAACP study states that,”The African American buying power is at 1.1 trillion; and yet only 2 cents of every dollar an African American spends in this country [United States of America] goes to black owned business.” The buy-black movement was fueled by the deaths of the many African American men and women such as Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, and Michael Brown, whose murderers, police officers and citizens, were failed to be scentences for their crimes. According to The Atlantic Black Star, “…as Black consumers are not respected, they continue to face institutional racism, policies that undermine their families, brutal police harassment tactics and mass incarceration. If #BlackLivesMatter, it also means that they must matter to Black people and that we can no longer pay good money to finance our own oppression.”
For just about every category that you are currently purchasing from, there are many black-owned businesses that are offering the same or better products and services that will put money back into the black community. For this holiday season, consider purchasing products from the many black-owned companies and businesses that provides exceptional and one-of-a-kind products.
